Polkura’s story begins in 1999, when winemaker Sven Bruchfeld and Gonzalo Muñoz, friends and fellow university students, shared a dream: to create a Chilean wine that would express its origin with authenticity.
During a harvest in southern France, a glass of Mediterranean Syrah and lamb with mint defined what would become their future. Both understood that this variety should be the heart of the project they would one day build together.
Back in Chile, they searched for the perfect place. In 2002 they found it: an neglected properoty in Marchigüe, western Colchagua Valley, with the ideal soil and climate conditions to produce a Syrah with character, elegance, and sense of origin. At that moment, the experienced viticulturist Cristián González joined them, completing the team that conforms Polkura to this day.
Polkura means “yellow stone” in the antient Mapuche language, referring to thelarge amount of yellow granite that dominates the area. The first harvest was in 2004, establishing the beginning of a project guided by the belief that wine must faithfully reflect its place of origin.
Polkura is part of MOVI, the Movement of Independent vintners, a group that brings together Chilean wine producers, making wine on a human scale, with identity and creative freedom. Being part of MOVI means crafting wine by hand, from the vineyard, without industrial preconceptions or repeated formulas. We believe in showing true Chilean wine: diverse, with character, and its own identity.
