The POLKURA HILL in the Colchagua Velley, Chile is kind of a football stadium with 360° of sun exposure. Our main variety is SYRAH and this wine includes all parcells of the hill. POLKURA means “Yellow Stone” in the ancient Mapuche language, referring to the large amount of yellow granite that can be found in the area.

At the beginning of the summer in 2008, the Polkura Hill suffered a bush fire, threatening the vineyard and getting very close to the area where the Malbec is planted. Thanks to several neighbors, a disaster was avoided. Although a Malbec component had always been used in previous years for the Polkura Syrah blend, after this event this great Malbec deserved to be bottled on its own.

There are two reasons to produce a wine without irrigation. One reason is technical, as it allows the absolute expression of the place, or “terroir” of the vineyard. By not irrigating, the intervention is minimal. Each year production is completed using only the water provided by nature. The other reason is that each year water as a natural resource is more and more scarce, which necessitates learning to survive without irrigation.

In the southern hemisphere, the sun comes from the north. In the POLKURA vineyard, the most interesting sites are definitely those oriented towards the south, with less direct sunlight and therefore a lower heat accumulation, resulting in much more elegant wines.
POLKURA is the name of a little hill, located inside the vineyard. On its slopes grow the
grapes that make this wine. POLKURA means “yellow stone” in the native Chilean Mapuche
language, referring to large amounts of yellow granite spread along the clay soils of the
area.
